FastCap: the world’s first low ESR reflowable SMD ultracapacitor

FastCap Ultracapacitors are one of the latest exciting things to appear in the electronic market.

More designers are appreciating the characteristics of reflowable ultracapacitors and are finding more and more uses for them in their projects. The ultracapacitor (sometimes called supercapacitors or electric double layer capacitors) fills the gap between batteries and capacitors in terms of energy and power needed for applications.

Ultracapacitors match the load behavior to the energy storage capabilities. If your load and energy storage time constant are mismatched, you will be starting at a disadvantage.

Ultracapacitors store energy in the electric fields and do not use chemical reactions like batteries. This allows them to charge and discharge instantly, providing higher power than batteries. The high charge/discharge capability makes ultracapacitors a great solution by themselves or in hybrid power solutions working along side the batteries.

Ultracapacitors are not widely used in high volume production because no practical ultracapacitor could survive the high-volume electronics manufacturing process, until now!

NANORAMIC LABORATORIES wanted to make practical ultracapacitors for high-volume electronics manufacturing processes and created a reflowable surface mount ultracapacitor (FastCap Chip Ultracapacitor). Nanoramic’s nanocomposite electrode and advanced electrolytes make the Chip Ultracapacitor possible. The surface mount design enables the use of standard pick-and-place and solder reflow assembly, avoiding expensive manual assembly. The Chip Ultracapacitor can survive the extreme heat of the soldering process several times.

Applications

This unique features of Chip Ultracapacitors solve problems across many applications.

An example is the use of ultracapacitors in Solid-State-Drives (SSDs) to provide a backup power when the main power source fails

The ultracapacitor bank is configurable for various voltages and energy requirements as per the application demands.

Chip Ultracapacitors can be used in IoT applications. Almost all IoT sensors have some form of RF communications. Moreover, they spend much of their time in a deep sleep state. Managing the wide dynamic power demands is an ideal application for ultracapacitors. The transmit power demand can be 1000 times that of the sleep state. GSM applications are particularly demanding with peak pulses of 2A or 3A for very short durations.

Choosing a battery only solution places greater demands on the battery specifications. If an ultra capacitor complements a battery, on one hand the ultra capacitor deliver the peak pulses, on the other hand the battery can deliver the steady state demands.

Applications in multiple sector

All forms of transport will also benefit from ultracapacitors as vehicles move to electric drives. There are more electronic systems on board that need resilient power, DC bus hold up power and energy storage. New possibilities open up in industrial and medical devices where they need low profile reliable or hermetically sealed energy storage in small form factor circuit boards.

The high reliability of Nanoramic’s ultracapacitors make them suitable for aerospace and defense applications.

The SD85-500 has better energy density than tantalum capacitors. As a result, it enables designers to save board space leading to smaller products or more room for other features. Two FastCap SD85-500 Chip Ultracapacitors can replace 12-20 tantalum capacitors of the same capacitance.
