Space Micro 18th Anniversary: 1.5 Million hours of Space flight heritage

Dimac Red’s partner Space Micro, Inc. recently celebrated 18 years of successful business in March, 2020 with a monumental milestone: 1.5 Million hours of Space Flight Heritage.

Space Micro – a trusted satellite subsystem supplier to nearly every U.S. space prime contractor and government agency – calculates this data by tracking the number of failure-free operational hours of its nearly 100 satellite electronics units for various missions and programs in Low Earth (LEO), Geostationary (GEO), Medium Earth (MEO), and lunar orbits. Among these programs are: Air Force TacSat 2, Navy TacSat 4, Air Force ORS-1, NASA IRIS, NASA LADEE, NASA CRS, NASA TESS, DLR DESIS, SpaceIL’s Beresheet, multiple DoD classified, and several commercial space missions.

“Our space flight heritage includes the entire spectrum of our product line of digital, image processing, electro-optic, and space radio systems,” said Space Micro’s CEO, David J. Strobel, “And is set to include our lasercom terminal with an upcoming launch in 2020.”

Space Micro logged additional successes this past year, including:

  • Secured orders for cameras from two different customers to support their Artemis lunar program efforts.  A radio order from a third Artemis contractor is expected next month.
  • Its Ka-Band mission data transmitter is successfully enabling the NASA TESS exoplanet discovery mission
  • Delivery of three spacecraft, including RF payloads, to a U.S. Government agency
  • A move to a new, state-of-the-art 43,000 sq. ft. facility in northern San Diego

“We’ve had a banner year,” said Strobel. “Space Micro’s backlog of business has grown by over 80%, and the company has addressed that growth with the move to a larger manufacturing, engineering, and headquarters facility, as well as the addition of over 25 new engineers and staff specializing in virtually all engineering disciplines – optical, digital, communications, software, RF/microwave, firmware, parts, and mechanical. We’re very grateful to our many customers and talented staff for our continued success.”
